A recent study has shown that exposure to endocrine disruptors present in dust can affect metabolism in the body. So, is the effect of dust making you fat or thinner?
Can dust make you gain weight? It sounds ridiculous but it is true! A recent study at Duke University, Durham, showed that in the fat cells of mice there is a small amount of dust containing endocrine disruptors. This causes fat cells to grow faster and causes the body to gain weight.
What are endocrine disruptors?
Endocrine system disruptors can be made by the human body or found in nature. These substances interfere with the production and function of hormones. They are found in a wide variety of products that you come into contact with on a daily basis, such as pesticides, cosmetics, food packaging, and in cleaning appliances. Bisphenol A, phthalate and flame retardant additive are the most common endocrine disruptors.
Scientists have shown that the effects of dust can increase your body’s risk of serious diseases like cancer, infertility and neurodevelopmental disorders. In addition, the exposure of these substances before birth can also make children more likely to gain weight and become obese.
Dust can increase triglycerides in the body
To draw conclusions, the scientists collected dust samples in 11 homes in North Carolina and then analyzed the content of endocrine disruptors. They eventually identified a total of 44 pollutants in it.
Next, the researchers examined dust sample extracts on 3T3 – L1 cells obtained from mice. These cells are often used to evaluate how the compounds affect the production of triglycerides (a type of fat the body uses for energy storage). Having too much of these fats means you will gain weight and risk related diseases.
The study results showed that in 11 dust samples, up to 7 dust samples are capable of activating triglycerides into mature fat cells. Meanwhile, it seems that only 1/11 of the dust sample has no effect. This proves that indoor dust can cause you to gain weight and suffer from weight-gain-related diseases.
Potential health hazards
The team identified three endocrine disruptors that have the greatest impact on triglyceride accumulation and 3T3-L1 cell proliferation, namely: pyraclostrobin in the pesticide, the flame retardant additive TBPDP and the DBP plasticizer. Researchers note that just 3mcg (microgram) of indoor dust is also capable of producing fat.
The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says that children typically eat, inhale or absorb through the skin about 50mg of house dust per day. So the likelihood of obesity in children is very high. So, do not be too negligent in cleaning your home. Keeping your home clean is a prerequisite for keeping yourself and your loved ones healthy.
