You can hear from each other about the harmful effects of methylparaben in cosmetics that increase the risk of cancer and cause infertility. So what is this problem really?
Please find out the information about methylparaben to know if this product is safe for you to use.
What is methylparaben?
Methylparaben is considered a paraben commonly used as a preservative to help the product last longer. Parabens are added to foods or cosmetics to prevent the growth of mold and other harmful bacteria.
Methylparaben is found in many cosmetics such as makeup, shaving products, hair care products, moisturizers, deodorants, processed foods, and medicines.
If you want to know if a product contains methylparaben, check the ingredients on the product. US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) require all manufacturers to list methylparabens and other parabens if they are included in the product composition.
Also keep in mind that the alternative names for these ingredients are methyl 4-hydroxy benzoic acid and methyl 4-hydroxybenzoate.
Is methylparaben in cosmetics safe?
Methylparaben does not accumulate in the body because in fact, the body discharges chemicals out quite quickly. Despite this, many consumers are concerned about the safety of this chemical because there is information that methylparaben may increase the risk of cancer.
Although some individuals report negatively about the harmful effects of parabens, so far the FDA and other researchers have found no conclusive evidence. In one research from FDAThey concluded that parabens were safe for use in cosmetics, foods, or medicines.
The Environmental Working Group (EWG) says this chemical can cause low or moderate harm to cause allergic reactions when you use the product in excess of the recommended level. However, the EWG says that methylparaben is not the cause of infertility in couples or cancer.
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) tested the urine of more than 2,548 participants in a 2005 to 2006 survey. The researchers found that most of the participants had a certain amount of methylparaben in urine but there is no problem with this chemical.
Whether or not the use of methylparaben and other parabens is safe has not been conclusive from scientists after the studies. As a result, the FDA continues to permit methylparaben to be used in different products.
Note when using methylparaben in cosmetics
When using products containing the chemical methylparaben, be careful not to stand in the sun for long as this will damage your skin.
Several studies have examined whether methylparaben-containing skin exhibits any adverse reactions from sun exposure. As a result, your skin can become damaged if exposed to sunlight when using products containing methylparaben.
You may also increase your risk of getting cancer if you have skin damage caused by sun exposure while using products containing methylparaben. This may be due to oxidative DNA damage caused by the effects of sunlight on the skin using methylparaben products.
Neither of the above studies provided enough evidence for the FDA to consider methylparaben to be harmful when used in products as directed. However, other side effects are possible.
You may also experience other skin problems if you get damaged skin from contact with products containing methylparaben.
Products containing methyparaben are still believed to be safe for now. If you are concerned about possible allergic reactions, please read carefully the ingredients on the product to choose for yourself ingredients that are natural and contain no preservatives.
